Upper Peninsula Writing Project

It's a Winter Wonderland!

Saturday Sessions:
Last one for this semester is December 12. For the winter semester dates are January 9, February 13, March 13, and the annual SI Kick-off May 15. One directed study credit is available if you attend 3 of 4 sessions. Time: 9-12 noon in room 201 Gries Hall. Feel free to invite a colleague or student teacher and let them experience the UPWP firsthand. It's a great recruitment tool.

MARC Book Study
Heather Hollands and Amy Laitinen will lead the winter semester MARC book study. Penny Kittle's book Write Beside Them which won the 2009 NCTE Research Award is provided free to participants. To register contact Heather at hholland@gwinn.k12.mi.usClick for more information.

Summer Opportunities
The Leadership Team would like to offer an Advanced Institute this summer. Do you have an area you'd like to explore? Do you have an area of expertise you'd like to share with TCs? We're looking for both AI ideas and TCs interested in leading an AI. To teach, TCs need only a Master's degree. Email your ideas to Jan, Mark or Paula.

Annual retreat dates are set: Thank you to Paul Collins and his family, we are planning our retreat at the same beautiful setting on Conway Lake. Mark your calendars now as we now how they fill up fast--August 16-17, 2010. It runs from 10 am to 10 am. Wouldn't you love to take (another) sauna in a train caboose?

NWP Opportunities:
Join NWP leaders from around the country to examine the intersections of interesting threads of work related to adolescent literacy and content area learning. What's Next: Possibilities for Literacy and Content Area Learning, March 5-6, in New Orleans, will feature keynote speaker Elizabeth Birr Moje. Registration deadline: JANUARY 22.

Continue Funding Application
The Leadership Team, with help from Suzanne, worked with Mark and Jan on our grant application. During this process we brainstorm goals for the upcoming year. Even though the grant is written, we are always interested in your ideas. Remember we are all "teachers teaching teachers" and want the UPWP to be your UPWP. Contact any Leadership Team member by email, in person, or by phone.
